PRICES AND BENEFITS

Making Improvements Step by Step

The services we offer are proposals based on the previous knowledge of the animals and the space to be modified, just as your employees and your work philosophy. That is why all the steps of our work methodology are required to develop a conceptual design or installation remodelling that meets all requirements to ensure animal welfare.

Our proposals are based on direct ethological observations of the subjects following a scientific methodology to be able to offer the best results. For this reason, it is necessary to take into account different variables such as the type of species, number of individuals or possibilities to observe the installation properly. Due to this, the prices are indicative and will be adapted to the type of project that will be carried out taking into account all the factors previously mentioned.

From Danaus EthoDesign we seek to offer the designs that best suit your needs following the work methodology shown below. If you are interested in working with us, do not hesitate to contact us so we can develop the best action plan for your project.

  • 100 hours of on-site observation + 100 hours of data analysis.

  • Interviews with zoo staff.

  • A study of how animals, visitors and zoo staff are using the facility.

  • Observation of individual preferences of objects and areas present in the facilities.

  • Final report:

    • Results obtained in the Animal Welfare Analysis

    • Analysis of the factors that may be triggering unwanted behaviours (ABC of behaviour) focus on behaviours activated by resources competition.

    • Final conclusions that include the development of a monthly enrichment calendar and the study of weaknesses, threats, strengths and opportunities (SWOT) together with the general assessment of the facility

TRAINING SERVICE

BASIC CONCEPTS OF ANIMAL WELFARE

900€ (30 hours)

The first approach of the staff to a new concept about the relationship between caregivers and animals. This approach is based on the latest scientific contributions and new tools related to the improvement of animal welfare. This training includes:

  • Animal Physiology: Basic physiological characteristics and main problems derived from captivity.

  • Behavioural ecology: Relationship of the animal with the environment, conformation and group dynamics.

  • The caretaker as a key piece in the gear of the zoo.

  • Development of the caregiver's own skills: Collection of data of ethological interest, veterinary or scientific doctor.

ANIMAL HANDLING AND TRAINING: HOW SHOULD THE HUMAN-ANIMAL RELATIONSHIP BE?

900€ (30 hours)

One of key points in animal welfare is the training and animal handling have to be based on mutual trust between the trainer and the animal. The creation of an environment of harmony in daily life favours the optimization of work routines and reduces stress in animals. This is why this tool is key in a zookeeper of the future.

  • Human-Animal Relation (HAR): Training and animal-caretaker relationship.

  • Training history: Origin and evolution of training theory. Changes in the relationship with animals.

  • Training theory: What is training, how, when and why we have to use it and the different existing techniques.

  • Training applications: Applications and functions of training and its application to practical cases.

ENVIRONMENTAL ENRICHMENT: CALENDAR AND EVALUATION

900€ (30 hours)

The establishment by that animals of their own routines is key to the development of their natural behaviours just as they would do in their natural habitat. Daily environmental enrichment (EE) and continuous adaptation of the facilities are a fundamental part of achieving this goal, but this will never be possible if the zoo staff does not have a good training in this field.

  • History of EE: Origin and evolution of training theory. Changes in the relationship with animals.

  • EE theory: What is environmental enrichment, how, when and why use it and the different types available.

  • EE Routines: Observation, design, scheduling and evaluation of environmental enrichment on a daily basis. Role of the caregiver in the design of facilities.

  • Behavioural needs of space: ecology and group for conflict resolution.
